Asthma Precautions During the Monsoon Season

Everyone is looking forward to the monsoon rains, which will provide relief from the summer heat. However, the Monsoon season brings with it some unwelcome problems for many Asthmatics.

India Contributes 11.1% of the global asthma burden and is responsible for more than 42% of asthma-related deaths. Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease of the breathing tubes that causes coughing, wheezing, mucus, and difficulty breathing.

Because of the many triggers present during this season, the rainy season can cause asthma flare-ups:

1) Humidity and low temperature: Asthmatics have difficulty breathing air due to cold air and high humidity (more than 60%). In stagnant air, high humidity traps dust, smoke, and pollen.

2) Fungal growth on the dump walls:

Fungus grows on damp walls in the house when the humidity is high and the air is stagnant, especially in the bathrooms and kitchen.

Fungus can cause asthma and other respiratory problems.

3) Pollen:

The rainy season is when the most pollen is shed and trapped in the air.

Having indoor plants during this time of year can aggravate asthma attacks.

4) Furry Animals:

Dust mites found on pets can cause asthma attacks.

Increased time spent indoors during the rainy season can increase the risk of dust mite exposure.
