Why is Burn Awareness Important?

Burns are one of the most common household injuries, yet many people don’t know how to respond properly. From hot water spills to chemical burns, knowing the right first aid steps can prevent complications and save lives.

Types of Burns & Their Severity

  • First-degree burns – Red, swollen skin (example: sunburn).
  • Second-degree burns – Blisters, severe pain, deeper skin damage.
  • Third-degree burns – Charred, white skin; may not be painful due to nerve damage.
  • Chemical & Electrical burns – Can cause internal damage; need immediate medical attention.

What to Do Immediately After a Burn?

  • Cool the burn – Run cool (not ice-cold) water over it for 10-15 minutes.
  • Remove tight clothing or jewelry – To prevent swelling.
  • Cover with a clean cloth – Use a sterile, non-stick bandage.
  • Stay hydrated – Burns cause fluid loss; drink water.

What NOT to Do?

  1. Do NOT apply ice – It worsens tissue damage.
  2. Do NOT pop blisters – It increases infection risk.
  3. Do NOT apply toothpaste or butter – It traps heat and worsens burns.

When to Seek Medical Help?

If the burn covers a large area (more than palm size).

If it affects the face, hands, feet, or genitals.

If the skin turns white, black, or leathery.

If caused by chemicals or electricity.
